Why I hate Terminal on Macs

Ugh. Just ugh. I had a lab in my Computer Science 202 class today. The computer I sat down to was already booted into Mac OS X, and I didn’t want to restart it just to get into Windows, so I just logged in and opened up terminal since I’d be doing the whole thing over SSH anyways. I should have basically the same experience, right?

Wrong. So wrong its insane.

I had pleasantly forgotten that even when using SSH terminal doesn’t send nice commands like “Pg Up” and “Pg Dwn” to the server, nor does it send “End” for some reason. I can’t remember, but I’m also pretty sure it refuses to send “Home” as well.

This is why I hate working on a Mac.

Apple reported today at it’s event that the iPod Touch was better than the Nintendo DS for the following reasons:

No Multi-Touch User Interface
Games are Expensive
No App Store
No iPod

Now, If you don’t like to listen to me rant, It would probably be a safe bet that you’ll want to skip this post, because I’m going to be going into great deal about what exactly is wrong with those reasons. If you’re willing to listen to me rant and rave, then just continue reading

No Multi-Touch user interface:

Now, this is mostly true. I can’t really refute or argue this statement. However, homebrew developers working with the DS have managed to enable multi-touch operations.

Games are Expensive / No App Store

Now, when Apple was talking about the Nintendo DS games being expensive, they were referring to the cartridges you pick up off the shelf that can run anywhere from $20 to $50 per game. Of course, this is for good reason. The games generally contain a lot of information and can be quite large file sizes. Apple has the advantage here due to their widely accessible app store, which generally maintains low prices on all applications. However, Nintendo has this too on the DSi. It's called DSiWare and currently has 38 titles due to how they approve games, and locking out small developers. These games also sell for sub $10 prices.

No iPod

I’m not even sure what Apple means by this. Why would the DS and PSP have an iPod? They both play music files all on their own.

I just wanted to correct these misconceptions Apple may be giving people. They’re obviously not entirely true, but they do bear a certain amount of truth.

Overlooked: iTunes 9 & Windows 7 Make Sweet Love

I’m not much of an Apple fanboy, in fact I generally don’t care much for the brand at all. But today’s iTunes update has made even me smile in elated happiness just a little bit.

Why is this, you ask? Because Apple is making sweet, sweet love with Windows 7.

As you can see, iTunes has added the ability to pause and skip forward and backward in Windows 7, a feature that (so far as I know) is only supported by Windows Media Player at this moment in time. But that isn’t all. The application now loads up quicker, doesn’t usually give off that annoying black background in place of UI elements, and even includes some Windows 7 Tasks!

As you can see very plainly in this picture, iTunes 9 has added tasks involving the iTunes store.
