How To: Fix Dell Truemobile 355 Bluetooth + EDR on Windows 7

One of the few problems that have really been giving a bad rap to Windows 7 users is the loss of proper Bluetooth Connectivity on Dell Laptops, specifically the Truemobile series.  The cause is, unsurprisingly, a lack of Dell support – no updated drivers.  In fact, if I recall, my Bluetooth wasn’t working properly on Windows Vista either, which the computer came pre-installed with.  Since the problem is Dell Drivers, the solution is fairly simple:  Screw Dell, set it back to the Windows Drivers.

Open up Device Manager.

Device Manager

Once there, right click “Dell Truemobile 355 Bluetooth + EDR” and click “Update Driver Software…

Browse my computer for driver software

You then want to “Browser [your] computer for driver software.”

Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer

Then click “Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer

Generic Bluetooth Adapter

Select the bottommostGeneric Bluetooth Adapter” and then wait forever for it to install.  (Yes, this one takes forever for some god awful reason, but it seems to consistently work).

Step 1 - FINISH!

The next step is disabling the “Power Management” feature to turn this device off.  (Since Dell has crappy driver support, this only helps to cripple the usage of Bluetooth).

Right click your new “Generic Bluetooth Adapter” once the Device Manager refreshes.

Generic Bluetooth Adapter Properties

Click the “Power Management” tab in the properties dialog, and make sure to uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”  Once you have done that, you should be good to go!  No more Bluetooth Problems on your Dell =)

Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

In this demonstration, I used a Dell Inspiron E1705, though this problem plagues many, many other Dell Laptops running Windows 7.

I am very happy to have found your post, after many hours of trying to fix the problem with my Inspiron 1525 with Windows 7 losing the connection to the mouse intermittently. It drove me crazy.

I just applied it now. From what I read here, I won’t have to remove and then add my BT mouse two or three times a day anymore.

Thanks very much for the great post!!

  • mlemus

Excellent note my friend. Thanks a lot!!!
Why the “Dell support” don’t said this, and problem resolved!!!!!!
    WTF.

    Thank again

  • Graygray43

Thanks for this wonderfully clear solution, but I’m afraid it didn’t work on my XPS M1730. The “wait forever for it to install” bottommost “Generic Bluetooth Adapter” actually takes a second only, and after unchecking the power Management “Allow…” box none of my bluetooth devices work (same situation as before your fix). Is it possible the generic adapter driver is not installing at all? Or could I be leaving something out which is not listed in your fix? I am not computer literate, so I would like you to know that after 12 months of trying to get my headphones to work, yours is the first solution I have been able to follow; most forums are so filled with acronyms and jargon that I am unable to even begin to follow them! Thanks again for the clarity, even if it doesn’t work for me:)

Thanks for this post. It solved a problem I had with a bluetooth connection for my Galaxy S2 phone with my Dell Inspiron 1520 after after a Win 7 upgrade.

Apologies.  I only happen to know enough about computers in order to be able to really truly break them.

This is simply something I attempted to fix my own problem that worked.  I unfortunately have no idea why or how it worked, just that it did.

Wish I could be of more help.
